The Indigenous People of India
The last year I have spent researching the indigenous people of India which is the least discussed topic in the country. This research is for my master's degree's major project.
The aim is to contribute towards the preservation of an indigenous language using Visual Communication Design.
Research Areas
Language
This is the dominating topic for my project and the most interesting one. My research covers the Mundari language of the Munda tribes of India and the Sadri language which was developed as a result of Hindi and other dominant languages in the Chotanagpur Plateau area.
History and Migration
The migration of the Indian Tribes i.e. the Mundas and the Oraons have not been much researched on. The Mundas were the aborigines of the Indian sub-continent which is still a topic of huge dispute. On the other hand, the Oraons came a little later with the Dravidians.
Suppressed Community
As a minority and weak community it has always been subjected to suppression. Whether it was the British colonisation or the Internal colonisation, both played their roles in suppressing the community. The latter still continues to do the same.
Identity
Identity is also one of the important topics of discussion in my project. The community has been fighting for their identity, language and land for a long, long time even before the British colonised India. The community is still trying to recover from the disenfranchisement.
Gift of Education
What role did the Christian missionaries play in the education and language development of the Indigenous people of India?
